Disaster Preparedness
Welcome to the Malibu Outrigger HOA Disaster Preparedness Page
Living in Malibu means enjoying beautiful coastal views, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant community. However, the beauty of our area also means we face risks such as wildfires, earthquakes, and the potential for coastal flooding. This page provides important information to help prepare for emergencies.
Links are provided below to various agencies below to help keep you informed in the event of an emergency, however we are all responsible for our own disaster preparedness. MOHOA WILL ATTEMPT TO CONTACT ALL OWNERS VIA TEXT IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY BUT OWNERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONTACTING THEIR TENANTS AND GUESTS TO CONFIRM THEIR SAFETY STATUS AND COMMUNICATE THAT TO THE BUILDING MANAGER. IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE OR OTHER LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY, CALL 911.
1. Wildfire Preparedness
Malibu is surrounded by brush, hills and dry vegetation, making it particularly vulnerable to wildfires. Preparing for wildfires is essential for your safety and the safety of our community.
Steps to Prepare:
Emergency Evacuation Plan: Know multiple routes to leave Malibu. Plan your evacuation route and ensure everyone in your household knows where to go. Consider pets in your plans.
Emergency Kit: Keep a portable emergency kit with essentials (water, food, medications, flashlights, etc.) in a readily accessible place, such as your car. The HOA strongly recommends that Owners make a disaster kit available inside their unit for their guests and tenants.
Stay Informed:
Sign up for Malibu Alert, a community emergency notification system provided by the City of Malibu. CLICK HERE or visit www.malibucity.org.
Follow Cal Fire for real-time wildfire updates in our area. CLICK HERE or visit www.fire.ca.gov/incidents.
Do not assume that cellular communication or Internet will be working. Have a battery or solar-powered emergency radio to listen for evacuation notices and emergency information.
Tune in to KBUU 99.1 FM, or on the Internet at www.radiomalibu.net
2. Earthquake Preparedness
California is earthquake-prone, and Malibu is no exception. While we can't predict when an earthquake will strike, we can take proactive steps to help protect ourselves and our homes.
Steps to Prepare:
Secure Your Home: Bolt heavy furniture and appliances to walls. Install safety straps on tall furniture, such as bookshelves, and secure loose items like lamps, picture frames and mirrors.
Drop, Cover and Hold On: Practice this simple drill with your family. Drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture and hold on until shaking stops.
Earthquake Insurance: Consider purchasing earthquake insurance to protect your belongings against potential damage, as standard homeowners or renters policies typically don’t cover earthquakes.
3. Coastal Flooding and Tsunami Preparedness
Coastline, such as ours in Malibu, is at risk for flooding, especially during storms or when tsunami warnings are issued. Residents should be prepared for potential flooding and coastal evacuations.
Steps to Prepare:
Know Your Flood Zone: Check if your property is in a flood zone using FEMA's Flood Map Service Center. If you live near the coast or in a low-lying area, be extra vigilant.
Flood Insurance: Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Consider purchasing flood insurance to safeguard your property.
Evacuation Routes: Familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes and evacuation center locations. Pay attention to tsunami alerts and coastal warnings.
Stay Informed:
Sign up for Tsunami Warning System alerts to receive notifications of tsunami threats or visit www.tsunami.gov.
Keep an eye on the National Weather Service and Los Angeles County's Emergency Management websites for updates, or visit www.forecast.weather.gov or www.ready.lacounty.gov.
4. General Disaster Preparedness for Malibu Residents and Visitors
No matter what disaster you may face, general preparedness is crucial.
Emergency Kit Checklist:
Every household should have an emergency kit with the following supplies:
Water: At least one gallon per person per day for at least three days.
Food: A three-day supply of non-perishable food. (canned foods with can opener)
First Aid Kit
Medications: A 7-day supply of necessary prescriptions.
Flashlight and Extra Batteries, and/or solar charging capability
Whistle: To signal for help.
Portable Phone Charger
Sanitation Supplies: Toilet paper, moist towelettes, garbage bags.
Documents: Important papers (ID, insurance policies, bank account numbers) in a waterproof bag.
Family Communication Plan:
Identify a meeting place: In case of evacuation, know where to reunite as a family.
Designate an out-of-town contact: Keep a list of emergency contacts and make sure everyone in your household knows how to reach them.
Practice evacuation drills regularly to ensure everyone knows what to do and where to go.
5. Role of the Homeowners Association (HOA)
The Malibu Outrigger Homeowners Association (HOA) plays a vital role in helping our community stay safe and prepared.
What the HOA Does:
Community Alert System: The HOA maintains an emergency communication system using text messaging to keep you informed about local disasters, evacuation orders, and emergency resources.
Coordination with Local Authorities: The HOA works closely with the City of Malibu, LA County Fire Department and LA County Sheriff’s Department to keep our residents informed.
Disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility, and together, we can keep our community safe. Take action now to ensure you, your family, guests and tenants are ready.
